Competent Communication

It was only this week my brother and I were speaking about a pastor who is extremely eloquent with the English language.  We indicated that he is an effective communicator when it comes to preaching.  He is able to take you through the process with ease because he is excellent at manipulating the language and create such clear imagery which at times can be quite witty.  There is no other person in his fraternity that we are aware of that can communicate so appropriately and effectively.  We even alluded to the fact that most likely he reads a lot but he has excellent retention capacity.  O’Hair & Wiemann (2009) stated that competent communication must be both appropriate and effective.  In order words, it must help us to fulfill the demands of the situation as well as the expectations of the audience, in addition, to the attainment of our goals.

I will not object to modeling some of my own communication behaviors after this person because I am always impressed by people who can communicate effectively.  I certainly believe it enhances one’s repertoire of skills and increases his/her chances at succeeding in life.  These persons are usually selected as group leaders; they are highly acknowledged and generally succeed at interviews.  Their chances for promotion are almost guaranteed if one were to be judged only the basis of communication.

  1. Evelyn,

It is an interesting fact that many pastors are able to captivate an audience when delivering a message. My pastor has very exemplary communication skills. When he speaks he provides excellent illustrations. He delivers his message with so much poise and confidences. I really enjoy when he speaks. I am so attentive each times he speaks.

  2. I have also found pastors to be wonderful examples of great communicators. My church has had a change in pastors recently and all three of the pastors we have had in the past 2 years have been great communicators in their own ways. The retired pastor was a former lawyer who used eloquent speech, the interim pastor was an amazing story teller who used humor a lot, and our new pastor has so much passion in her words! They are all effective communicators who could resolve conflicts and get their points across, but all do it differently, and that's ok.

  3. Evlyn,

I believe pastors are born to be effective communicators. Most of the pastors background plays an important part in helping them to speak eloquently and with such passion. At the same time, they get their message across in their own special way.

  4. Evlyn,
I agree it is amazing to see how effective most of the religiuos leaders are. Some remember amazing numbers of names of the people who were around long time ago, upto today. The way they remember the scripture is like a computore data base for me. The most amusing is how they preach the scripture, which was wriiten thousands of years ago applicable to the 2011.
    Thank you for Sharing!

  5. I find speakers that use humor or satire often are more effective because they keep their audience engaged and get their attention.
